Sports Physiotherapy

This form of physiotherapy deals with the treatment of sports and exercise-related injury. These injuries can occur at any age and any level of fitness. You may have a child or adolescent with overuse injuries or be a high-level team or individual competitor. Perhaps you are a weekend warrior, a social golfer or a tennis player. No matter what your sport or level of fitness, you are susceptible to injury from time to time.

If you become injured, it is vital that you seek early intervention. Otherwise, you risk a prolonged period on the side-lines.

Manual Therapy

Manual therapy is a more traditional physio method used primarily for joint complaints. It involves the physio working on a painful joint to mobilise it (gently move it) or manipulate it (a firmer movement) to ease stiffness and pain. Joint mobilisation techniques are used to improve and restore movement. They are used on the spine (neck and back) and also on peripheral joints such as the ankle, knee and hip, shoulder, elbow, and wrist.

This technique is particularly useful if your pain is very acute as it’s hands-on nature helps with desensitising tissues and relieving pain, giving you back a pain-free range of motion.

Dry Needling

Dry needling is an effective treatment technique that involves the use of very fine, sterile, single-use acupuncture needles to deactivate trigger points. Treatment involves the insertion of a needle into the muscle, creating a ‘twitch’ sensation, and releasing tension. It is usually necessary to treat many different trigger points to obtain the best results. Post-treatment, there is a release of muscle spasm and improvement in muscular function.

Dry needling can be used to treat a variety of musculoskeletal problems as the treatment of muscles with this technique can reduce pain mechanisms and break down pain cycles developed by the nervous system.

Although dry needling uses the same needles as acupuncture, it is not the same technique.  Dry needling is strictly based upon Western medicine principles of treating myofascial trigger points, which are different from traditional acupuncture points.
